“I was fighting myself. Fighting the things I couldn’t control. Fighting the urge to simply take without asking and ruing any chance I had at forever with the one person I had ever wanted to promise that to.” I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I like Jay Crownover's style. I've read every one of her novels, and I plan on reading more. I might not always like her delivery, but for some reason her voice pulls me in. With Honor, I liked nearly every damn thing. Honor might well be my favorite Crownover to date because this highly charged, … [Read more...]
Review: Sugar Free by Sawyer Bennett
Well, that was one heck of a crazy series. Phew! Where to begin? Sometimes, if done really well, I am totally on board with serials and cliffhangers. Sawyer Bennett did this whole series really well. The intrigue, mystery, heat, and suspense are set on high from beginning to end. Combine those with Bennett’s writing style and she basically has you eating out of the palm of her hand. I devoured each one of these books and while the cliffhangers were brutal, they were short-lived and only served to heighten the intensity of the … [Read more...]
Review: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Have you ever been inundated by a book, seemingly seeing images of it wherever you turn, stalked by ads, nudged by reviews? I read Dark Matter somewhat out of frustration, because I kept seeing that distinct red and black cover, even though it's not typically a book that would even be in my stratosphere. I don't read science fiction, and I don't read thrillers. But, thanks to Amazon's creepy ass algorithm, Goodreads, and Barnes & Noble for their clever shelving, I succumbed and decided to read this book. Call it fate, or simply math and … [Read more...]
Review: Sugar Rush by Sawyer Bennett
Sawyer Bennett is about to kill me with this series. One huge cliffhanger was painful enough, two is torture. But I have to admit that it’s a sweet kind of torture. I cannot get enough of this story. Sugar Rush is very different and unique. It’s kind of dark and gritty, with Revenge almost like a third lead character. Normally I’m kind of hard to please with these kinds of stories too, because they tend to get very extravagant and I find myself thinking “oh, come on! That would never happen!” That’s not the case with these books … [Read more...]
Review: Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King
I haven’t had this much fun reading a book in a while. Mr. Mercedes is far from my usual read (in case you didn’t know, this girl loves romance), but I fell in love with this wild ride from the opening scene, and I was totally captivated the whole ride through. I read this last year and had no idea how to review it, but I’m making myself put thoughts to paper this time around. Mr. Mercedes is the definition of thrilling and entertaining, with enough thoughtfulness and introspection thrown in to make this more than a shallow read. Bill Hodges … [Read more...]
Review: Sugar Daddy by Sawyer Bennett
I’ve been a big fan of Sawyer Bennett’s for some time now. I was drawn to this book completely by the cover, the title, and obviously, Sawyer. I did not read the blurb and went in completely blind. I naively assumed that this book was a standalone because every other book of hers that I’ve read has been. So it should go without saying that the cliffhanger ending just about killed me. Sugar Daddy sucked me in from the very beginning. Sela, especially in the beginning, is a very dark and damaged character that is difficult to understand and … [Read more...]
Review: Collared by Nicole Williams
“You always had a way of taking the ground right out from beneath me.” I’m an admitted chicken. I don’t typically do the “dark” reads. I just mentally can’t. I absorb them too much, experience them too deeply. I usually feel myself slip into a sort of depression and it’s just mentally exhausting. So I tend to stick with the lighter stuff. When my friend raved about this book and roughly explained to me the premise, I just had to read it and find out what happens. I’m so glad that I did. “I’ll never finish falling in love with you.” This book … [Read more...]
Review: He Will Be My Ruin by K. A. Tucker
A truly gripping, sexy, and captivating suspense. If this is Tucker’s new bag, then I’m buying it. I love K. A. Tucker’s stories and writing. There’s something effortlessly entertaining and compelling about her stories, and I think it’s her talent. She’s a smooth writer; her vigorous prose easily flows, making it easy for my eyes and mind to devour her words, sentences, and pages. I’m a reader, a reader of many books, but I’m an easily distracted reader, so the writers that can ensnare my overwrought, over-thinking brain, and allow me to block … [Read more...]
Review: For You by Kristen Ashley
My search for the perfect Kristen Ashley book continues. I keep reading her books and liking them, some of them I like a lot, but I’m not having the same reaction that other people have. I just want to have that over-the-top “this is one of my top, top favorite books” reaction. But she has a lot of books, so at this point, I’m not ready to drop her yet. I decided to try The Burg series because many people have told me that some of her best books are in this series, so I was excited to pick up For You. I liked this book. I could’ve loved it, … [Read more...]
Review: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Seriously compelling, ridiculously addicting, and so very fucked up. The Girl on the Train was one of the most fun books I’ve ever read. I know, fun isn’t the first word you’d associate with a book like this, but I was lit with excitement by the time I got off this crazy ride. This book featured one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever read. Rachel is fascinating like watching a building collapse is fascinating. I don’t think I’ve ever cringed or screamed more at a character. I’ll give you some details about the events in this book, … [Read more...]
