“If you were mine, Iris, there would be no doubt what position you’d hold in my life. You’d be center. I’d play you at the five.” Wow. What an emotional ride Long Shot was. I feel emotionally wrung out. But what a painfully beautiful story. In the last year or so, I’ve stopped reading the synopsis before I read the book. Sometimes I’ll read it after, sometimes I won’t read it at all. I don’t read teasers, or excerpts. I ignore basically everything about a book before I read it because I find that I enjoy stories more when I don’t know what … [Read more...]
Review: Forever Right Now by Emma Scott
I first read Forever Right Now last year. I fell into the lives of Sawyer and Darlene as one does with an Emma Scott book; easily and relentlessly. Frankly, I did not want to leave them, which probably explains why I’ve reread FRN this year and frequently skim my kindle copy to relive my favorite scenes over and over again. Each time feels like finding a $10 bill in the pocket of a winter coat. It’s full of exciting discovery and pure joy mixed with a bit of surprise. How these simple feelings can be brought out by Emma’s easily read prose is … [Read more...]
Review: Roomies by Christina Lauren
To say that I was blown away by Roomies would be a bit of an understatement. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I picked up this book. It’s possible that the unexpectedness of what I would experience while reading this book is exactly why I feel as strongly about it as I do, but that doesn’t change how much I really and truly love it. I have loved every Christina Lauren book I’ve ever read. They are an epic romance-writing duo and I usually know what I’m going to get out of their books. They’re always funny and sexy, and can … [Read more...]
Review: Bad Judgment by Sidney Bell
Bad Judgment was another recommendation from my book wench, and this was honestly the first time I doubted her. I have never tried to give up on a book so early. I’m ashamed to admit that I almost bailed on this one after only reading one chapter. But lucky for me, she shamed me into giving it more time and I am so glad she did. Let me start off by saying that I wasn’t a big fan of the whole Embry’s revenge storyline. I felt like it was a tad dramatic and unrealistic and it just didn’t really interest me. It was hard to relate to so I wasn’t … [Read more...]
Review: Burn for You by J.T. Geissinger
2017 has not been my year when it comes to books. Life has really gotten in the way and I just haven’t been able to read with quite the same voracity with which I’ve read in the last several years. I normally read upwards of 100 books in a year’s time. I’m on track to read 52 this year. I’ve tried all kinds of things to jump start my mojo again, to no avail. Until now. My last read was greatly influenced by a book friend and I loved it! I completely ate it up. So without her consent, I took the liberty of assigning her as my official … [Read more...]
Review: The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata
I read this book on a whim after seeing a couple of book friends swooning over it on Goodreads. I didn’t even bother to read the synopsis. I impulsively twitched my One-Click finger and dove in. And I’m so glad I did. The Wall of Winnipeg and Me started off slow but before I knew it, I couldn’t put it down. I was skeptical of Aiden in the beginning, he was stand-offish and borderline rude. There wasn’t a whole lot there to like in the beginning. But he slowly won me over. There is slow burn, and then there is this book. Talk about a … [Read more...]
Review: Love Me in the Dark by Mia Asher
I don't understand why this isn't a full length novel. I am in no way a fan of love triangles, so it's a strange thing for me to advocate a full-length novel featuring one, but I feel strongly that this should've been that. And if it was that—if the author gave the characters their full due—then I would've loved it. I mean, I would've hated having to experience the angst, but I would've appreciated the book for its openness. Love Me in the Dark is well-written (in terms of prose), and I honestly loved reading it and was fully taken in by the … [Read more...]
Review: Midnight Soul by Kristen Ashley
The Fantasyland series has been one of my all-time favorites, but Midnight Soul is definitely my least favorite of the series. I still liked it, it was okay, it took me forever to read, but I wanted to end the series on a high note. This sort of just felt like a really long fizzle. I have to give credit where credit is due – I never thought Ashley could turn Franka into a character I could sympathize with, much less like. But she did it, so hats off for that. But beyond that, I don’t have a whole lot to say about this book. The story felt … [Read more...]
Review: The Knocked up Plan by Lauren Blakely
I loved The Knocked up Plan way more than I expected to! My expectations are automatically lowered if there’s abs on the cover. (Side note: Can we please stop putting abs on the cover?!) There was much more than meets the eye with this book. I haven’t read many books by Lauren Blakely, in fact I think I’ve only ever listened to a couple on audio, but if this is the norm then she just earned herself another reader. This is a modern day romance. It’s not going to offer you any new insights into life, reveal anything of great philosophical … [Read more...]
Review: Roommates with Benefits by Nicole Williams
Here I am again, reading a book only because Nicole Williams wrote it. Last time it paid off huge. This time? Not so much. Roommates with Benefits started off pretty strong. I felt that Hayden’s back story seemed a tad dramatic but I was going to go with it. Soren was likeable from the beginning. He was a hottie baseball player living in NYC with a smart ass mouth. The first time he met Hayden was fraught with tension and sparks and I couldn’t wait to get more of their dynamic. And I wasn’t let down. Until I was. There was an unnecessary … [Read more...]
