2014 is over and it was a fantastic year! I’ll definitely miss it, but do you know what today means? What the first day of the year means? It means a blank page! New books yet to be open, new authors yet to be discovered, and new book friends we can obsess with. I am stoked!
I had so much fun during the first half of the year when I was a reader, and later on when I entered this wonderful world of blogging. I learned a great deal, met the coolest people, and some great virtual friendships which I hope will become ‘real’ ones someday (ABF, I’m looking at you!). Since 2014 was so great, I have high hopes for this year, and I plan on utilizing the lessons I learned to ensure that it’s not only as good, but better.
My first resolution, and the most important is to have fun reading. It sounds simple, but I’m sure other bloggers and readers will understand me when I say that sometimes this world can get a bit overwhelming, and you lose sight of the thing you love the most – reading books. I’m going to detach myself from sales, new releases, must-read books, hot authors, etc. I’m not going to get caught up in building my TBR list, and reading what everyone else is reading. I can’t anymore, because when I do, I can’t enjoy the book I’m reading, because I’m thinking about the next book I should be reading. Where’s the fun in that?! I’m going to read what I want to read this year.
My next resolution is an extension of the first: I’m going to read the books I have. I have close to 200 ebooks on my Kindle and almost 100 hard copies of books that I’ve never read. That’s insane! Why did I buy all those books, just to let them sit and gather dust? No more. I’m putting my 1-Click finger in the holster, and I’m going to use my hands to turn the pages of the books I already own. And it’s not like this is going to be a great chore, or that I’m missing out on anything. I have books that I’ve been dying to read for months, years, but never got around to because I got caught up in the nonsense. There are a few titles that I’ve already preordered, and I am very excited to read, so I won’t ignore new releases completely, but my new motto will be: if you’re not going to read it right now, then don’t buy it right now.
My third and last resolution will be to do more blogging. By that I mean more blogging on this site and less networking on social sites. That’s not blogging. I spent way too much time posting about what was going on in the book world, and trying to keep up with the latest. I know I don’t come even close to being like some other blogs who post updates multiple times each hour of the day, but even with my limited posting, it still took time, finding links, scheduling, posting flash giveaways, etc. Ain’t nobody got time…It took away from my reading life, and my real life, and that’s just sad. I’m cutting back to preserve the fun, and also because this semester is going to be hectic for me, so it won’t even be possible. I’m just giving you a heads up as to why. When I do post, it’ll be my usual fun ridiculousness, and I’ll try to do most of it here. I was underutilizing this website, and I’ve decided that instead of chasing new networks to stay in touch, we can stay in touch here. At the end of the day, that’s what blogs are for. To that end, blogs are also for posting thoughts, and expressing your creativity; they’re not billboards. I was getting tired of seeing the same posts on my page and everyone else’s, and I’m sure that you guys were getting tired of seeing the same stuff everywhere too. As a result, I’ll try to be more selective with my PR sign ups, so that things don’t get redundant.
In essence, I’m going back to basis. My blog is going indie. All three resolutions are small goals to the greater goal: to do me. If you feel at all like I feel, then I think you should do you too. Get back to basis, and have fun. These resolutions are going to be really difficult for me to maintain, so you’re going to have to help keep me on track! What are some of your resolutions for this new year? I wanna know, so comment below (hehe, that rhymes). 😉
